Disability group takes on new role reviewing “faultless” Portsmouth pub!

Since its launch last month, the new Over 25’s Social Group has hosted two successful meetups, but this weekend saw an exciting evolution in its format. Inspired by the highly popular Dynamite group, the gathering incorporated a new focus – exploring local venues and discussing ways to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

When the We Shine Portsmouth events at Hilsea Lido were canceled on Saturday due to stormy weather, the group found refuge at the nearby Coach & Horses pub. The evening turned out to be a resounding success, with one first-time attendee praising how much they enjoyed the experience and three parents expressing delight at the new friendships formed.

The meetup featured an engaging discussion led by James Donougher from Enable Ability, with participants sharing insights on key accessibility considerations. The group reviewed features like ramps, step-free access, wide doorways for electric wheelchairs, disabled parking bays, and dog-friendly policies for guide dogs. Other aspects, such as lighting, menu readability, music volume, and staff attentiveness, were also assessed.

While the Coach & Horses excelled in many areas, including its food and drink offerings and friendly staff, the group noted a few areas for improvement. Suggestions included offering larger-font menus for visually impaired guests and ensuring tables are spaced adequately for wheelchair users. The temporary blackouts during the evening, caused by adjustments to dance floor lighting, were also mentioned as a potential concern.

Despite these minor issues, the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. The group enjoyed classic games like Connect 4, Uno, and Dobble, rounding off a lively and productive evening. The session proved to be an excellent indoor alternative to their original plans and highlighted the importance of creating welcoming, accessible spaces for everyone across the City.

As the evening wrapped up, conversations turned to the next social gathering, with suggestions like a Christmas-themed karaoke at Casemates. However, some concerns about the venue’s location and public transport access were raised.

James, who facilitated the session on behalf of Enable Ability, left at the pre-arranged time of 8pm, while some attendees stayed on to enjoy the convivial atmosphere a little longer.

The Over 25’s Social Group is clearly off to a strong start, combining social fun with meaningful discussions on accessibility. With plans for future meetups already underway, the group is set to make a lasting impact on both its members and the wider community.
