Finding the perfect family-friendly pub can be a challenge—too loud, too cramped, or simply not built for pushchairs and wheelchairs. But does the Golden Hind break this mold? We stopped by last week with our new Over 25 Social Group to see just how accessible this local spot really is.
First Impressions: A Smooth Arrival
Getting to the Golden Hind is refreshingly easy. If you’re coming by bus, you’re in luck, it’s just a stone’s throw from a bus stop, meaning no long walking distances need to be accomplished before your pub visit. Drivers will also be pleased to find a large car park with disabled bays right by the entrance with wheelchair access being very good from the rear car park, the car park is free which is always an added bonus in a heavily built-up urban pub.
Inside: Space to Breathe
Ever walked into a pub and felt like you were navigating an obstacle course of chairs, tables and wandering toddlers? Not here. The Golden Hind is wonderfully spacious, making it a breeze for wheelchairs, pushchairs and even the occasional unsteady grandparent. There are also quiet corners, perfect for those who like their meals with a side of peace and quiet.
The atmosphere? Warm, welcoming and not drowning in blaring music. A rare find.
The staff? Polite, patient and refreshingly unbothered by indecisive orderers or special requests.
Food, Glorious Food
Hungry? The good news is the food comes out really fast with no long waits which isn’t uncommon for most pubs. This can only mean less time waiting and more time eating. But sadly, there’s always a downside? Portion sizes could be bigger. But with great meal deals throughout the week and unlimited water (a small but crucial win for hydration enthusiasts), there’s still plenty to love.
The pub also runs themed nights and events, adding a little extra excitement to the mix. And if you hate carrying cash, fear not, both card and app payments are options here.
Toilet Troubles and Triumphs
Let’s talk facilities. There are disabled toilets but the toilets are apparently as warm and inviting as an Arctic expedition.
And parents of little people, brace yourselves, we couldn’t easily spot any baby-changing spaces. If you’re bringing little ones, you might need to get creative to overcome this small issue.
The Final Verdict
With great service, plenty of space and a welcoming vibe, the Golden Hind is a solid choice for an accessible family-friendly outing. The chilly toilets and the small portions knock a few points off, but overall, it’s a winner.
Would we come back? Absolutely, perhaps best to avoid a Friday night where one man decided to get extremely drunk and drop his trousers! Fortunately this happened in another part of the pub and staff were quick to escort him off the premises.
Our charity’s office team returned to the pub just a week later to enjoy a very belated Christmas celebration together, a photo of the wonderful team who work in the office can be found in the photos below. Maybe next time though, we will remember to wear an extra jumper for the toilets!
