Enable Ability Over 25’s Visit Gandhi in North End

The Enable Ability Over 25 Social Group enjoyed an evening at Gandhi in North End last night. Gandhi is a firm favourite with the local community and this was the first time group leader James had visited.

This inspection has been written with the help of the people with disabilities who attended, sharing their own experiences of the evening.

The staff gave us a warm and light-hearted welcome, joking that the restaurant was closed when in fact we had come through the service entrance rather than the main door. Their humour continued throughout the evening, with one member of staff insisting that if we didn’t like the food, he would eat his (non-existent) hat.

Service was very good and the food arrived quickly thanks to the trays on wheels that ensure everyone’s meals reach the table at the same time. Portion sizes were generous, food was hot, and there was a wide variety of options to suit different tastes and budgets. Free rice was included which was a nice bonus. Drinks came in large sizes, and the restaurant was happy to accept separate payments from the table.

As Project Leader, James ordered the Nawab Special – tandoori chicken breast in a thick masala with a tantalising combination of Indian spices cooked with fine minced lamb. This dish stood out for its rich flavour and depth, showcasing the quality cooking Gandhi is known for. Other group members tried a variety of curries from the menu, all of which were well received.

The venue itself is very spacious and well lit, making it easy to access for wheelchair users. Tables, cutlery, and the overall space were clean, while the décor was authentic and welcoming. Gentle background music created a nice atmosphere without being too loud for conversation. Hot flannels were served at the end of the meal, followed by mints and feedback cards which were a thoughtful touch.

Other highlights included the smiley staff, the great Sunday deal of unlimited food (which tempted several members to consider a return visit), and the easy location with many bus routes nearby. Parking, however, proved more difficult which unfortunately delayed James’s arrival.

The only mishap of the evening was when Chloe managed to get stuck in the toilet and broke a sign in the process, but it quickly became a source of laughter and added to the memorable nature of the night.

Sadly, attendance was lower than usual after a long break with no social events taking place in August. To make up for this, we are doubling the number of events during September and we would love to see more people join us. We have capacity for 20 attendees and welcome both familiar and new faces.
