Over 25 Co-Production Group Shares First Impressions of the Newly Reopened Green Posts Pub

The Over 25 Co-production and Social Group visited the newly refurbished Green Posts pub on Tuesday evening during its first week of reopening. The group spent time exploring the space, trying the menu, as well as discussing how accessible and comfortable the venue felt for people with a range of disabilities. This visit formed part of their ongoing work to share honest feedback with local businesses so that disabled people can make informed choices about where to go in Portsmouth.

The group found the refurbishment to be smart and welcoming, with good lighting throughout and no fluorescent lights, which several people appreciated. The atmosphere was relaxed and quiet enough to hold conversations easily. Most of the pub is step-free and a ramp can be placed at either the main or side entrance when needed. There is an electric car charging space nearby, although no clearly marked disabled parking.

The seating was comfortable, although some felt the spaces between benches were a little tight and a few would have preferred back rests. The food was described as lovely, cheap and cheerful. Project Leader James described his meal as the best burger he has ever had. He ordered the Buttermilk Chicken Burger, which comes with cheese, hash browns and curry sauce inside the bun, along with mayo, baby gem lettuce and red onion. It is served with fries and onion rings, all for £9.49, with a further 15% off if you have a Blue Light Card. For anyone without a Blue Light Card, the same burger is available for only £6 on Wednesdays. Desserts were generally well received, but one member ordered a sorbet through the app which turned out not to be available, and they felt it should be removed from the menu to avoid the same confusion for anyone else. Big television screens show sport and the new decoration was thought to be very good. Toilets have been refurbished but felt cold, and the disabled toilet key is available on request from the bar.

The group tried the Rock & Roll Bingo during their visit but found it difficult to follow, as it was fast and the game was quite short, despite being advertised 7.30-9.30pm, plus the game didn’t start until 8.30pm. Overall, most people felt the Green Posts has a good atmosphere and is largely accessible, though there are areas where small adjustments could make a positive difference.

One group member, Chloe, shared that she had recently received tips at her volunteering role in a cafe, which was a highlight for everyone to hear during the visit. Ada also mentioned that she has booked a trip to Longleat and encouraged others to come along, although some were hesitant because of the cost.

This report has been written by the participants themselves as part of their co-production work, sharing their lived experience to help improve accessibility and inclusion across Portsmouth.
